1.3 School-Wide Behavior Changes
Sparrows Point faculty and staff is committed to the behaviors and values representative of a Green School. During the 2016-2017 school year, faculty and community newsletters, faculty agenda and associated professional development documents, and the faculty handbook went completely digital and remain that way.

During the 2020-2021 building closures due to COVID-19 pandemic, the PE department recognized a need for students and faculty to engage in healthy activity from home. Throughout the first semester (September to the end of January) students and staff participated in the "Fitness is a State of mind Challenge". For 18 weeks miles were tracked with the goal of walking, running, biking, jogging, etc. approximately 323 miles, the distance it would take to walk across the state of Maryland.

In the fall of 2014 Sparrows Point High School hired an Environmental Education Resource teacher, Sandy Runyan. Sandy was joined in the fall of 2015 by an additional Environmental Education Resource teacher, Vern Smither. The two work closely with our teachers to schedule and manage field trip requirements, clean and maintain numerous woodland trails between our school and the marsh, maintain our canoe launch, fix equipment, guest teach, and provide expertise from their vast experience in education and their knowledge of the outdoors. They are an invaluable resource.
Vern is also a DNR police officer with the following credentials
Note: The American Canoe Association and MD DNR Boating are members of an umbrella organization called NSBC. It is pretty rare, much more so than obtaining a USCG captain’s license, to be certified as a hands-on power-boat instructor. Mr. Smither teaches the MD Boater Safety course to all 9th grade Field and Wildlife students. He has also taken it upon himself to teach the course to our juniors and seniors so that ALL of our magnet students will graduate with the Safe Boater's card and proper knowledge of the environmental safe way to operate a boat. SPHS is very fortunate to be joined by these exceptional individuals. |
