2.1 Water conservation/Pollution Prevention
#1 Trash Clean-up
Sparrows Point students are Trash warriors! Our students are frequently seen around campus and in the community cleaning up litter. Our school has a set of five gallon buckets and pick up tools and when the weather is nice students are out there using them. Our students volunteer during weekend cleanups sponsored by community groups such as Edgemere Green Society, Back River Restoration, and Clean Bread and Cheese Creek. Our efforts were recognized on May 10, 2017 by the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools. Sparrows Point High School came in second place for the Clean Green 15 Challenge. We were presented with a check for $800.00 to continue our efforts with environmental literacy and environmental projects. This money was used to install a vegetable garden. Previous awards for the Clean Green Challenge were utilized to plant a large native garden as seen in this application. The Covid 19 pandemic building closures did not stop our students from cleaning trash and preventing it from entering the Chesapeake Bay. Students continue to remove trash from their neighborhoods. Additionally, our students participate in community sponsored litter clean-ups. Our Science National Honor Society students have planned a clean-up for later in the year.

#3 Pollution Awareness
Student members of the Green Team are involved in educating the rest of the student body about the dangers of pollution. Students are responsible for designing and creating displays for the large display case in the building. The most recent themes for the display case were "Drowning in Plastics" and "We need to Recycle."

Students in 9th grade Earth systems learned about the importance of conserving water during the Changing Hydrosphere lesson. Students then created Public Service Announcements that were displayed throughout the school. The purpose of the PSA was to educate others about how to reduce their Water Footprint. Approximately 150 students in 9th grade standard, honors , and GT classes participated in the lesson and the projects.
