2.3 Solid Waste Reduction
Sparrows Point students are the masters of solid waste reduction. On this page we will share all of the ways our students live the three R's of Solid waste Management.
#1 Reduce and Reuse
Each year unused or broken furniture is placed outside of the school headed for the landfill. Our students have found interesting ways to reuse these unwanted materials and repurpose them. During virtual instruction our students made bird feeders from repurposed materials in their homes.

#2 Reuse and Reduce
During virtual learning students created morning announcements to help educate students about the importance of reducing our trash through reusing materials and composting. Additionally, the Green Team hosted an activity on December 10th, 2020 to build bird feeders from recyclable or reusable material. Students and teachers joined each other on Google Meets to build the houses and socialize with each other. It was a great time!

#3 Recycle
The recycling game at SPHS is STRONG!! The student run recycling program at SPHS has been up and running for at least 10 years. During the fall of 2019 recycling efforts allowed us to double the amount of recycled materials. Students petitioned for a second recycling dumpster to handle the additional need. Weekly an email is sent or an announcement made directing teachers to place their classroom recycling bins in the hallway. A group of students collects the recycling and records the number of filled recycling bins taken to the recycling dumpster. Students also help to monitor classroom bins for non-recyclable material.
In addition, to the school recycling program our students also recycle ink cartridges and participate in the ColorCycle program to recycle markers.

#4 Reduce
During the spring of 2019 several students recognized the need for reducing the large amounts of cafeteria waste. Students organized and facilitated the SPHS Share Table program. The program resulted in the placement of a "Share Box." Students who had wrapped food that they did not want could place the food in the share box for others to eat. Green Team students were responsible for monitoring the box and removing any perishable food such as milk from the box after the end of the lunch shifts.

The Intercultural food and Nutrition and Foods classes are reducing the amount of trash being produced by our school. Students learn about the importance of composting and recycling. Students are responsible for composting their food waste into the two compost bins located outside the classroom. Students also recycle food containers.
